Near Ontika the precipice reaches its maximum height - 55,6 metres. In 1996 the commission of the Academy of Science declared the 25-metre high Valaste waterfalls a natural heritage and a national symbol. In 2003 the new record height of the waterfalls - 30,5 metres - was approved.

Standing on the observation platform right in front of the falls, it is possible to enjoy a motley-striped cut precipice more than 35 metres high that is perfectly visible behind the falls. It shows how our native land looked like about 80 million years ago. Nearby there is a twenty-four hour cafe that can host 26 people.
