Brief review
Ida-Virumaa is Estonian northeast county bordered with the Finnish Gulf in the north, the Narva River in the east and Peipsi
Lake in the south.
In the southwest and west the border lies mainly through forests and bogs separating the County from Jõgeva and Lääne-Viru
counties. The area of Ida-Virumaa is 3 364,05 km2, which makes 7,4 % of the country area. The centre is the town of Jõhvi
located 165 km from Tallinn.
There are 22 local municipalities in the county formed by 6 towns and 16 parishes.
Ida-Virumaa is the most urbanised county in Estonia – about 88 % inhabitants live in towns. Altogether there are 168 656
people living here (2010). 16 489 (Sept. 2007) pupils study at Ida-Virumaa schools providing general education and about 75,7 % of
them study in Russian. There are 49 schools of general education, 62 pre-school institutions and 3 vocational institutions.
About 1300 students acquire higher education in state institutions of the County. It is also possible to obtain higher education in three private higher education establishments.

The County has great industrial traditions – the biggest part of Estonian production and power engineering potential
is located here and we produce about 16 % of Estonian industrial products.
The largest economic spheres are:
- shale oil refining, electricity and heating power production,
- chemical industry,
- trade,
- construction and building of materials,
- woodworking,
- metalworking,
- food processing,
- tourism.
Ida-Virumaa is a rich and controversial county. The county of long industrial tradition and beautiful nature is

Ida-Virumaa flag has two cloths of the same width: the upper one is white and the lower one is green. In the middle of
white cloth there is Ida-Virumaa county coat of arms.
Ratio of the flag width and length is 7:11 units. The normal size of the flag is 105 X 165 cm.
The county emblem is a toothed wall of citadel on a blue background. The wall ends with silvery tower leaving left part of
the emblem empty; the wall has five teeth, each of them has a black window opening. The tower has a red roof and four black
window openings, which are located on the three floors. Over the wall there are two crossed double-edged silver swords with
turned down golden hafts.
